Website Accessibility Remediation
What is Website Accessibility
Businesses have a responsibility to make their products and services equally accessible to every customer. In the same way that ramps are required for physical access to a business, businesses must make their websites navigable by individuals with disabilities.
These requirements are outlined in the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508 Amendment. When the Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990, modern communications technologies such as the Internet were still in their infancy. It was nearly two decades before international web standards were established. WCAG 2.1 Compliance is the current international accessibility standard.
Problem
Non-accessible websites are designed with barriers that make it difficult for people with disabilities to browse and interact. Federal and state laws require companies to ensure website accessibility; however, accessible website design is still not standard practice. Evaluating your website’s accessibility and ensuring compliance with international standards in accessible website design is a critical need for every business in 2021.
Case Study
One of our clients was the defendant in an accessibility lawsuit in 2020. The website is built on a popular e-commerce platform using a template customized to the business’ needs. They were contacted by an attorney representing a woman with sight-impairments who had difficulties browsing the site. The lawsuit sought damages between fifteen and twenty thousand dollars, plus attorney fees. The company also had to make their website compliant with WCAG 2.1 requirements, and quickly so, in order to meet legal deadlines.
Website remediation services recommended by their attorney were extremely expensive. Furthermore, it would take weeks to start the project and an additional month to complete the work. We were able to make her website WCAG 2.1 Compliant in two weeks and for about one-tenth of the cost. The work was verified by the attorney’s manual review as achieving the required AA-level of web accessibility compliance
